The stadium trick that changed how I see teamwork

Ok, I don't spend a ton of time on TikTok, but my husband (though he might hate I'm telling you this!..) is a TikTok guru, so he often finds the best of the internet FOR me. (Thanks, honey!)

And he showed me this video (especially as I'm desperate for a sense of communal joy, connection, creativity, and love!... ) of an entire stadium of kids in South Africa creating images to music by flipping cards in perfect synchronization. Every single person HAD to know exactly what card to hold up and WHEN to flip it.

If just ONE person decided "my part doesn't really matter" or let self-doubt take over (I don't want to look dumb, this is silly, feeling self-conscious) —there would literally be a HOLE in the picture.

Team, THIS MOVED ME...

It's such a perfect visual of what happens when individual people come together in pursuit of a shared vision. (I break it down in this week's #ThisMovedMe episode here!)

We live in a culture that so often celebrates the individual—the solo entrepreneur, the visionary CEO, the star athlete—as if their accomplishments were theirs alone.

But that's bunk. Bologna. BS.

Nobody does extraordinary things on their own. NOBODY.

The most magical moments happen through coordinated effort. (Even this simple email doesn't happen without about 4 people touching different aspects of it! 🤗)

Here's what's fascinating: In truly successful coordinated efforts, people don't just DO their part—they OWN their part, and show up with enthusiasm. They... as my amazing friend and speaker Carrie Campbell says... G.A.S. (or, Give a Sh*t)! They bring their full enthusiasm and excellence to it - and then tag-team with others who bring THEIR particular ZAG, too.

And here's the thing... the JOY multiplies when we coordinate our effort.

And whoooeeeee, do we need some joy right now!

So here's my nudge for you:

We are all, collectively, in the midst of some kind of hugely-needed coordinated effort.

Do you know your part? - your "zag"?

How enthusiastically are you showing up for it?

And - can you combine your efforts with another person's ZIG - to make an awesomely coordinated ZIG-ZAG?!

Whatever your part is—

don't just show up.

Show up with full, G.A.S. enthusiasm, and inspire the people around you to do the same.

And hey—would you do me a favor? Hit that subscribe button while you're there. I've got 119 subscribers and thousands of people reading this email... if just 10% of you took action? Well, that would be some coordinated effort magic right there! 😉

Every card flipper in that stadium mattered. Every single one.

Same is true for you.

How to show up more enthusiastically for the bigger vision:

  1. Contribute YOUR unique gifts. We've been talking about the importance of finding your ZAG. What aspect of your role can only YOU do in your unique way?
  2. Connect to purpose - How does your specific role contribute to the larger vision? Together, you can think bigger, do more, multiply the impact and joy.
  3. Create collective wins - Notice and acknowledge when coordinated effort creates something magical. Don't let others' gifts stay quiet, either. Recruit for more joy. We can create magic together.

P.S. If you haven't seen, I'm hosting a NEW workshop for aspiring speakers this coming Thursday at 12pm CT called Backstage Pass! In it I'll be sharing the 7 tools I use in my speaking business that have helped me shift from aspiring to pro. It's free - and it'll be a 45-min 'grab the info and go' session (vs, my standard, let's chat and connect session)! Both have their place, and right now I want to help you get what you need - and get you moving! You can register HERE.
